American Xander Schauffele beat compatriot Tony Finau in a play-off to win the WGC-HSBC Champions event in Shanghai at the weekend.
Finau went into the final round with a three-shot lead and looked on course for victory until Schauffele birdied the final two holes to force a play-off.
Schauffele then registered another birdie at the sudden-death par-five 18th to claim his third PGA title.
Finau narrowly missed out on his first title since 2016, whilst England’s Justin Rose finished four shots back and his Ryder Cup teammates Tommy Fleetwood and Thorbjorn Olesen also finished in the top ten.
Schauffele picked up 500 FedEx Cup points with the win and he now tops the season standings. He won twice during his first year on the PGA Tour last year to win Rookie of the Year and finished third in the 2017 FedEx Cup.
He has been in fine form in recent times when finishing as runner-up in The Open at Carnoustie, as well as the Players Championship.
His win at the weekend also secures a clean sweep for USA in World Golf Championship events in 2018.
Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson and Justin Thomas, three members of the 2018 Ryder Cup, have all triumphed on the WGC stage this year.
Schauffele will now be focused on having a strong end to 2018, whilst some are already predicting that he will be a serious contender at next year’s majors.
