The Open Championship Preview

The Open Championship returns on Thursday 18th July for it’s 148th edition, being held at Royal Portrush Golf Club. The Championship is returning to Northern Ireland for the first time since the same venue staged the event way back in 1951.

Citing golfing greats such as Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Harry Vardon as former winners, a selection of the world’s elite will be hoping to add their name to the history books this weekend.

At the time of writing this blog, four-time major champion Brooks Koepka is the favourite to win. Still fresh from winning the PGA Championship and finishing second in last month’s US Open, Koepka will want to vastly improve his T39 finish from the 2018 Open Championship.

Rory McIlroy is also an early favourite to lift the Claret Jug. After finishing T9 at the US Open, the Northern Irish man will be confident of putting in a good performance on home soil, although he hasn’t won a major since his PGA Championship victory way back in 2014, ironically the same year he also secured his only Open Championship win.

As is often said in any major, it’ll be hard to look past Tiger Woods, who will be looking to add to his 15 major titles this July. He produced a fantastic performance to win The Masters in April and Woods knows the Open Championship well, having won it three times previously in his career.

He finished T21 at Pebble Beach but will arrive at the Open Championship relaxed, after deciding to shun any prep events for the tournament and take in a family holiday to Thailand, in the belief he requires a rest before an action-packed summer!

If you are looking for a longshot, Xander Schauffele is well priced at 28/1. An emerging star, Schauffele was runner-up in last year’s Open Championship and has finished top 10 in four of the last six majors. Currently ranked top 15 in the Tour scoring averages, Schauffele has all the tools needed to perform well at this year’s Championship.
