Phoenix Open Preview

Hideki Matsuyama is looking to complete a hat-trick of Phoenix Open titles this weekend, as the world’s top golfers head for TPC Scottsdale, Arizona.

Matsuyama has twice won in play-offs in the last two years, beating Rickie Fowler in 2016 before retaining his title as he pipped Webb Simpson to the trophy last year.

If successful he will join Gene Littler, Arnold Palmer, Mark Calcavecchia and Phil Mickelson in an elite list of those who have won the tournament on three occasions, with Palmer the only man to win three consecutive titles.

Fowler has finished in the top four on his last two trips to Phoenix, whilst the likes of Justin Thomas, Jon Rahm and Patrick Reed will also be present in a strong field.

One man to keep an eye on this weekend will be Tony Finau, who is now a serious contender for a Ryder Cup slot after rising to 37th in the world. He has four top-16 finishes to his name this season, including a great run at The Farmers Insurance Open at the weekend.

Alex Noren lost a thrilling six-hole play-off at Torrey Pines and will hope to go one better this week, whilst Daniel Berger and Kyle Stanley, who has two top tens in his last four starts, are also ones to watch.
