Mexico Championship Preview

The 2018 WGC-Mexico Championship takes place in Naucalpan this week, in the first of the World Golf Championships events to be staged this year.

The tournament has changed names and venues multiple times in recent years, with 14-time major winner Tiger Woods triumphant on seven different occasions.

Dustin Johnson won the event for the second time in 2017, as he edged out Southport’s Tommy Fleetwood by one stroke to take the title.

It had been Johnson’s first start since ascending to number one in the world rankings on the back of success in the Genesis Open, and he is back this year looking for his third win in four years.

Justin Rose will look to follow Johnson and Woods and become only the third man in history to claim consecutive WGC titles, after winning the HSBC Champions event at the back end of 2017.

And his chances have increased with the absence of several of the world’s best such as Jason Day, Hideki Matsuyama, Rory McIlroy and Henrik Stenson.

FedExCup champion Justin Thomas arrives in good form after defeating Luke List in a play-off to clinch the Honda Classic in Florida at the weekend.

The likes of Jon Rahm, third in 2017, and Genesis Open winner Bubba Watson will have high hopes of adding to their recent successes, as will former WGC winners Patrick Reed and Phil Mickelson.
